Paper Towel Underneath Water Science Experiment

Are you able to fully submerge a paper towel underneath water with out it getting moist? The reply is sure, you possibly can! It wants some science trickery, however you’ll be stunned how straightforward it’s!

When the glass is positioned within the water, air is trapped inside it. The trapped air prevents water from stepping into the glass.

This model of the experiment is vaguely Halloween themed, so I drew a spider on the paper towel.

Learn how to hold a paper towel dry underwater

You’ll want

A big bowl or container

Paper towel/kitchen roll

Pens – optionally available

Water

Small glass

Directions

Fill the bowl or container with water and test the glass will be fully submerged contained in the bowl.

Lower the paper towel into quarters.

Fold one part of the paper towel and place it within the backside of the glass. Be sure that it stays on the backside of the cup whenever you tip it the wrong way up.

Place the glass the wrong way up into the water till it’s fully submerged.

Take away the glass. The paper towel ought to be fully dry!

Attempt once more however this time gently tip the glass as you take away it. What occurs?

Why does the paper towel keep dry?

When the cup or glass is positioned within the water, water is attempting to get into the cup, and air is attempting to get out. The 2 forces ( air and water strain ) are balanced, so the air stays contained in the cup, and water doesn’t transfer in. It is a nice demonstration of air strain!

Extension duties

Attempt utilizing cups of various shapes and sizes. Does it make a distinction?

Attempt certainly one of my different Halloween science experiments.
