DoD seeks improvements in small-satellite propulsion

WASHINGTON — The Protection’s Protection Innovation Unit revealed a name for trade proposals on superior spacecraft propulsion know-how, particularly specializing in electrospray thrusters.

Electrospray thrusters, which generate thrust by accelerating charged particles, promise excessive gas effectivity and exact management.

The DoD’s curiosity in electrospray thrusters displays the necessity for extra versatile and fuel-efficient spacecraft, particularly because the U.S. army more and more depends on smaller satellites for communications and intelligence functions.

Conventional propulsion programs utilizing liquid or gaseous propellants may be limiting, as gas should be fastidiously conserved for important maneuvers. Electrospray know-how may change this dynamic by enabling spacecraft to carry out extra frequent and exact changes with out worry of depleting gas reserves.

“The Division of Protection is searching for proposals for superior electrospray propulsion know-how that demonstrates superior efficiency in each thrust and particular impulse,” DIU stated. “These options ought to ship a high-performance, low-cost system able to supporting a variety of area missions.”

DIU is a DoD group devoted to accelerating the adoption of economic know-how for nationwide safety functions, It awards prototype contracts to firms with promising applied sciences that tackle particular DoD wants.

A number of industrial firms are already engaged on electrospray thruster know-how, together with Boston-based Revolution House (beforehand generally known as Accion Programs), Spanish small satellite tv for pc propulsion developer Ienai House, and Ion-X of France.
